Amy Dacyczyn, The Frugal Zealot, The Tightwad Gazette

I thought it would be fitting to kickstart this blog with a small piece about a book that inspired me in my move towards a more simple and frugal life.

Anyone that is trying to move towards a more frugal lifesyle, will have no doubt read "The Complete Tightwad Gazette". This is the book based on the monthly newsletter of the same name. The newsletter was published by Amy Dacyczyn during the early nineties, and contained tips and tricks for saving money, and creative approaches to everyday challenges. Amy suggested focusing, and spending, on what is important to you, and cutting the budget to the bone in other areas of your life. Save where it doesn't matter, spend where it does. In her life she shopped at thrift and garages sales for furniture and clothing, but invested in a large farmhouse for her growing family. For others it might be travel, music, or early retirement.

Unfortunately, Amy wrapped up her newsletter in 1996 before the age of the internet and blogs. However, her advice lives on. A compilation of the newsletters was released in book format in 1998 called "The Complete Tightwad Gazette". Check it out at the library, and if you're like me, you'll soon be adding it to your home library.
